I apologize if this is really obvious or if this has answered before. I looked around the forums and read the help section, but I still don’t understand.
Basically when I use the VR ONE the default image is off. For example, its too much to the right and not scaled properly. I see that there is a that shows a grid for setting up the image properly. Can someone explain how I can fix the image so it appears correctly in the VR ONE? I have tried pressing the buttons associated with the sensor, lens, etc. Thanks!January 30, 2015 at 3:23 am #2165
if using the default keys, 5 will cycle through the lens parameters (first time showing the grid image). Keep the grid image in focus, so that you can see it streamed on the phone (the image distortion doesn’t change on the server, only on the client side), strap on the VR ONE and adjust each setting with 6 and 7 (defaults for increase/decrease value of current setting).
Since the VR ONE uses a different approach, the lens calibration won’t be able to completely adjust to the lenses, but you should be able to properly centre the image and make it rounder to get closer to the headset characteristics.January 31, 2015 at 12:15 am #2176
sorry to bother you, but could you explain a bit more in detail. so i press 5 and the grid comes up. and im supposed to go through each setting, pressing 5 to go to the next setting, and use 6 and 7 to play with the image until it appears normal? im trying really hard and its not working. can you give me some tips on how i can work this out. thanks so muchJanuary 31, 2015 at 2:07 am #2177
ok, let’s start again: you mention the image is to the right and not scaled properly. Do you mean not the whole active window content is shown? because that would be a different issue. well, I cannot say for certain because I haven’t tried it yet (I have one, but no compatible phone/tray atm). But seeing this, it appears it has a different distortion/correction (completely round). I do not know if such distortion can be completely matched with current code, might do, might require some extra tinkering. I actually may order one here shortly and have my friend 3d Print me a tray. The difference between GS4(which there is no tray for yet) and GS5(which they do have trays for) is extremely tiny dimension wise:
136.6 mm (5.38 in) H
69.8 mm (2.75 in) W
7.9 mm (0.31 in) D
142 mm (5.59 in) H
72.5 mm (2.85 in) W
8.1 mm (0.31 in) D
So I feel confident that either the S5 tray can be modified, or that it can be used as a template and slightly shrunk for a 3d printed S4 tray.
Anyway I see what you mean about the completely round distortion. Although, I think it could be implemented – it looks like the image is simply warped onto the front half of a sphere.
I tried with the current lens calibration settings and got pretty close(at least, as far as I can tell without owning the device and just looking at pictures).

Well, I just ordered a VR ONE. Should be here within a week. As I said, I plan to either mod the S5 tray to fit my S4 since the sizes are so close, or else have my friend with a 3D printer design and print me an S4 tray.
I saw a few videos on youtube of people using Trinus + VR one, and I think it’s possible to get the distortion settings pretty close with the current set up. If not, I am sure Ioxai can make it where it can be.
Either way, I’m excited. I love my color cross but the constant finagling with it, and it smashing my face keep me from using it as much as I like. That and the fact I managed to ruin my lenses for it (DO NOT CLEAN COLOR CROSS LENSES WITH ISOPROPYL ALCOHOL, EVEN 50%. IT WILL RUIN THEM).
So anyway, once I get it I will be posting here about it, and maybe some correct (or very close) config files for the lenses.February 2, 2015 at 4:22 am #2241
I’ve seen some video about modifying the tray for other phones, but the 3D printed option sounds way more elegant 🙂 I don’t have access to a printer, and don’t really feel like damaging the original tray.
I might be able to borrow a GS5 at some point, while waiting for additional tray options. The VR One does look like a good solid product, really looking forward to testing it.

I have several ideas in my head, but I won’t be able to try them til it gets here. Fortunately the cheapest shipping option was 2 day shipping (and it was only 8 dollars for said shipping) and it shipped today, so that won’t be long.
I have 2 ideas that would involve modifying the S5 tray, but not in a permanent way(basically adding removable “spacers”) that I will try first. My friend with the 3d printer lives a ways away(well thousands of miles lol, he lives in Hawaii, I live in the continental states) so that would be the second option involving mailing things back and forth.
But basically it comes down to this – Zeiss said they can make trays for other phones(including the GS4). If they can do that, then IT CAN BE DONE. Simple as that. I will find a way!
Of course, once they ever DO make an S4 tray, I can always get that too.

Got my VR ONE today. It’s quite awesome, the build quality is so much beyond things like ColorCross. It was quite easy to add some foam spacers to make it fit my Galaxy S4 nicely.
But I bring bad news:
There is currently no way to get the distortion correct in Trinus for it. You can get somewhat close but it seems that the lenses don’t warp evenly across their surface. For instance, the inner part warps nearly none, the outer part warps severely. I’m still working on settings though, and I’ve gotten pretty close. So far I can say that it needs Warp X nearly maxed out, and then a bit of Warp Y. Then a bit of Warp W to compensate for the edges.
Anyway the chromatic distortion in it is also quite intense.
Either way I will keep working with it and report back. Hopefully I can at least get a grasp on what needs done so I can explain it well to Ioxai.February 5, 2015 at 8:33 pm #2279

I actually got to test it as well. By just adding some foam wedges I was able to keep my OnePlus One in place (very low quality fix, but gets the job done for now). I didn’t do a lot of calibration tinkering, but it does seem tricky to get it right.
I agree on the build quality, but certainly the chromatic aberration is quite strong on this one. Will have to sort out a shader improvement for it.
The other thing that I didn’t like is the strong zoom. The OnePlusOne is quite large, with dpi lower than the S4 or 5, so with the lenses focusing in a smaller area of the screen, the effective resolution decreases and the pixel arrays are rather noticeable.
On the plus side, the immersion effect seemed quite good.
The issues should be minimised with some tinkering, but not my favourite headset for now. I actually got a new cheap chinese headset that I only tried briefly but it does seem to me it is the best option I have tried so far (better than the ColorCross or the Ritech).February 5, 2015 at 9:09 pm #2281
Yeah, I’ve gotten really close on the calibration now. I’m almost certain that it can be done within the current settings, just that it’s really difficult. Well, it took me more than a month to dial my ColorCross in completely. I’ve certainly already got it well within usable range.
As for the zoom, I agree, but I accept it as a necessary evil. The colorcross had much less zoom(and so much less screen door effect and higher overall resolution) but because of the screen being much further away, I often found that it felt much more like looking in a small box or at a large 3DTV than immersive. The VR ONE is the other way – much more immersive, but much larger pixels overall. It’s a tradeoff, I guess. I do wish I could use a bit more of my screen though >_<
It’s certainly the most comfortable headset I’ve tried for sure. And yeah, I opted for low tech on the phone tray problem too – I made foam spacers and hot glued them in place. The camera and charging port on the S4 line up perfectly with the S5 tray, so that was no issue. The headphone jack doesn’t, but at least with Trinus that’s not a problem.
Meanwhile I mostly fixed my ruined colorcross lenses yesterday, so that’s nice. I can see different uses for each of them, honestly. The CC is somewhat better for the 2D “giant movie screen” effect, and the VR ONE much better for immersion. Now, if I could only get my colorcross to stop mashing my nose.
The little AR cube that comes with the VR ONE is pretty cool. It really shows off the possibilities of these type of headsets well I think.February 6, 2015 at 12:21 am #2282
Well after a ridiculous amount of tweaking I’ve got the lens calibration as close as I can get it. It’s extremely close, and quite usable. But yeah definitely need some correction for the chromatic aberration. There isn’t much in the lens center, but towards the edges it’s by far the strongest of the 3 headsets I own.
